Late-preseason roster moves rarely address glaring needs. Instead, they’re about securing low-risk options before final cuts. Washington’s reported signing of Boogie Basham fits that mold. The former second-round pick joins a linebacker group already flush with seven players and several established names.
Multiple reports say the Commanders will sign Basham after his Monday workout with the team. No contract details have surfaced, so the move’s value hinges on what Washington sees in Basham as a depth piece rather than any major commitment.
Linebacker isn’t a weak spot for this roster. Frankie Luvu, a nine-year veteran, returns. No. 7 overall pick Sonny Styles is set to debut alongside him. Leo Chenal arrived via free agency, and Jordan Magee is back as well. Heading into the final week of the preseason, Washington already had seven linebackers on the roster.
So why Basham? This isn’t about plugging a hole. It’s about expanding defensive options. On Monday, Washington hosted tryouts for eight defenders, three defensive linemen, four defensive backs, and Basham as the lone linebacker. That mix points to a broad search, but Basham’s experience stood out. As league attention shifts toward Super Bowl season, Washington clearly values his background.
Drafted 61st overall by Buffalo in 2021, Basham spent two seasons with the Bills before a trade sent him to the Giants. He played two years in New York, making his journey notable as a player who’s already changed teams via trade, not just free agency.
His NFL numbers are modest but steady: 61 tackles, 4.5 sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery over 43 games with the Bills, Giants, and Panthers. He’s also logged six tackles for loss and nine quarterback hits in five seasons. Most of that production came in Buffalo, where he tallied all 4.5 sacks and 37 tackles between 2021 and 2022.
Recent seasons tell a different story. Basham appeared in just three games for Carolina last year, making four tackles, and spent time on the Panthers’ practice squad. He later joined the Raiders’ practice squad late in the 2025 season but didn’t see game action before his January release.
His path back to the NFL ran through the UFL. With the DC Defenders in 2026, Basham posted 24 tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. UFL players became eligible for NFL contracts after the 2026 championship, and more than 60 have already signed this offseason as teams weigh 2026 roster and cap questions.
For Washington, the timing is ideal. The coaching staff gets a look at whether Basham’s UFL production can translate into a roster or practice-squad spot. He enters a crowded room with proven veterans, a top draft pick, and recent free-agent additions. The move won’t shake up the depth chart overnight. But it does give the Commanders another experienced defender with both NFL and spring-league credentials as preseason roster decisions loom.
